I use second hand Ebay phones for each of my ROVR devices. iPhone X/Xs with Helium = $70 + $20/month
For hosting, it can be difficult getting people to give up use of their main phone - especially when I am trying to target full-time drivers. To make things easier on both sides, I now provide used phones with pre-loaded SIMs to my hosts in exchange for taking a smaller portion of the split.
I think if you are going to spend roughly $2700 on a ROVR LC, then the cost of an additional phone and SIM is negligible when looking at earnings. For the sake of maximizing profit, you are better off getting a dedicated phone for this device.
Things are a bit different with the TX as the rewards are so much lower. Buying a secondary phone + mount for use with the TX can practically double your ROI time. While it would be nice to say that the TX is a good “background earner”, The constant use of the phone and inability to multitask makes it very hands-on.
While I hate to compare ROVR to Hivemapper, I do like Hivemappers approach to the ‘all in one’ device. If ROVR had an all-in-one device I think it would be much easier to scale worldwide.
@F_Pozzi He will only lose coverage if the balcony is covered. With this being a 2nd floor balcony of a house, I am doubtful that there is anything above it - Pending pictures.
Hi Petah, Id be happy to offer some recommendations but could you possibly provide some example pictures of your balcony? Everyone’s setup is a bit different and unique so it’s hard to give ideas without knowing your exact setup.
