@JD Thank you JD! I have ~20,000 people walk past my location per week. My Karrier One is averaging ½ GB per day so I am hoping that the Helium will see similar or better offloading. We shall see :)
I will, of course, make a video about this but I am unclear on what, if anything, I need beyond the Helium Hotspot to start earning. I have seen some info on needing a Helium phone in order to earn rewards? Is that correct? I know the project has evolved quite a bit over time so where are we now?
You don’t need a phone anymore, those requirements are gone. The biggest trouble you may run into is. The hotspot needs to be placed in a location with lots of people. It would then hopefully be flagged so carrier offloading can happen. You get picked if the hotspot is in a good location like a mall/pizza store/gym etc… If you are putting this at home probably won’t get carrier offload. This is how you make a bunch of money with data transfer. The other type of rewards of POC (proof of coverage) which is in a bad state right now and might not exist forever, you get these rewards for just deploying anywhere, but it’s not anything good compared to data transfer from carrier offloading.
Also it’s more likely to get selected for carrier offloading with a INDOOR wifi hotspot, the OUTDOORS don’t seem to get selected nearly as often.
Once you get carrier offloading, people who walk near the hotspot on t-mobile for example, might jump automatically to your wifi hotspot and if they consume some data while near it like watching a YouTube video, it will count towards the data transfer rewards.
