@Xrave yep I just use one of several extra phones I have (a cheap, $100-tier refurb phone is fine) and I believe the one I use for ROVR doesn’t have service, it just stays connected via a Wi-Fi hotspot I keep in my car.

@FreeShkreli The hotspot you keep in your car, such as Verizon, or one of the other "lesser known services?” Smart thinking on the vehicle wifi; I was going to do the same as well.

@Xrave I should have been more specific Xrave, I suppose I include that in the “external GPS screen/device category” but you are correct… Ive seen some good ideas here as well, and it seems there are a lot of ways to find cheap secondary phones to use.

I use second hand Ebay phones for each of my ROVR devices. iPhone X/Xs with Helium = $70 + $20/month
For hosting, it can be difficult getting people to give up use of their main phone - especially when I am trying to target full-time drivers. To make things easier on both sides, I now provide used phones with pre-loaded SIMs to my hosts in exchange for taking a smaller portion of the split.
I think if you are going to spend roughly $2700 on a ROVR LC, then the cost of an additional phone and SIM is negligible when looking at earnings. For the sake of maximizing profit, you are better off getting a dedicated phone for this device.
Things are a bit different with the TX as the rewards are so much lower. Buying a secondary phone + mount for use with the TX can practically double your ROI time. While it would be nice to say that the TX is a good “background earner”, The constant use of the phone and inability to multitask makes it very hands-on.
While I hate to compare ROVR to Hivemapper, I do like Hivemappers approach to the ‘all in one’ device. If ROVR had an all-in-one device I think it would be much easier to scale worldwide.

@Yakob There was a lot of good information in there Yakob, thanks for sharing that! I agree that the purchase of an additional phone when using in tandem with the LC is a nice supplement and does not cause a great offset to the cost. It also seems that the iPhone X is relatively cheap with and the Helium subscription isn’t bad either. Thanks for sharing that!

I have an old iPhone 11 laying around , put a SIM in the tray and using it as my rovr device
My main phone remains for CarPlay usage
Actually I have a seperate photo for Rovr only
I have 2 Helium phones, and one of them is used for Rovr. I use the Helium Zero plan and so far it has enough data to handle Rovr for the month.

I ended up using my regular iPhone, I just put a usb stick with music in my car 🤣 I don’t touch my phone while driving anyways. If I remember it does break the bluetooth calling though. (at least in my car)

@JD Only us old people know anything about putting music on USB sticks… If were really old we might have one of those old sun visor CD holders laying around somewhere. ;) I think the cassette tapes are probably all in boxes now… Or there was the really good times when your car had a cassette player, so you bought a portable CD player (had to be with anti-skip, so it read ahead for when you went over the bumps in the car) and used the tape adapter that plugged into the headphone jack of the CD player for music. ;P Even with all the new technology, we still have to find ways to be crafty to get our music to play. We are an intuitive people!

So a while back there was a discussion about utilizing your mobile phone for ROVR while driving and thus making your phone not able to do other things. You cannot minimize the ROVR to GPS and to other things and have the ROVR keep tracking; the ROVR must be maximized to work properly… Several options surfaced, such as purchasing a second mobile device, etc. I personally found a portable 10” CarPlay screen for $80 that I can now use for GPS and music, which frees the phone up, so I am curious what others have found as solutions!
The poll is missing probably most used option from: get another phone.
